Day Trip to Canton Valais with a Stop in Thun on the way back Home

Sunday September 28, 2025 -- Every year we have visitors from the States who we take on day trips to various interesting parts of Switzerland which regular tourists don't usually get to see. 

On this particular day, we chose to go to the warmer climate of Canton Valais, as there had been quite a large amount of snow in the mountains just days before. As we were using relatively cheap day passes, we wanted to make the most of the tickets and perhaps crammed too much into one day!

1) Traveling first via Spiez in the Bernese Oberland through the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, we aimed for the train station in Raron, and then used two cable-cars into the hills on the south of the Rhône Valley in Canton Valais, walking an hour between the villages of Eischoll and Unterbäch via a 260-meter long suspension bridge (Milibachbrücke).

2) Upon descent from Unterbäch, we returned to Visp and took a bus to Ausserberg on the north side of the valley, where we inspected this typical Valais mountain village before starting on a exciting two-hour walk along two historical irrigation channels within the Baltschieder Valley (of which there are several such stunning constructions, some 600 years old). The end of this 8-km walk was in the town of Eggerberg, from where we rode the South Ramp railway line back into Canton Bern via the upper Lötschberg tunnel. 

3) Before heading home, we checked out the charming town of Thun (which was the highlight of the day), after sharing take-out pizza. We headed back home by 7:30 p.m. (getting home at 9:45).

PART I: Raron to Eischoll and Unterbäch via Milibach Suspension Bridge.

Leaving home at just after 8 a.m., we headed south via Bern, Spiez and the Lötschberg Base Tunnel to Canton Valais. Here in the Bernese Oberland along Lake Thun, the weather is lovely and we can see the peaks of Mts. Schreckhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. 

From Visp, the train heads west for only four minutes, and we got to Raron at 11:18. A 5-minute walk to the cable car stations (both at the same place), and then a 5-minute ride and we were in Eischoll at just after 11:30. This is the little Eischoll cable-car.

We wanted to be back at the valley bottom for the 12:39 train back to Visp, and had less than an hour to get to Unterbäch Cable-Car station for the 12:25 run. As it's now 11:38, we don't have a lot of extra time! (45 minutes to walk a 40-minute trail!). The main attraction on this walk is the suspension bridge "Hängebrücke", the Milibach bridge.

A pleasant and short, 15-minute walk to the suspension bridge. 

The Milibach suspension bridge, built in 2022, is 260 meters long, and hangs 65 meters above the ravine. As this is a fairly recent build, this is also the first time we crossed this bridge.

Bietschhorn, and it is just on the other side of this peak that a piece of the mountain broke off earlier this year, causing a large glacier to crash into the Lötschen Valley and bury the entire town of Blatten. 

That beautiful bridge is a railway bridge along the Valais Sunshine Trail. The trail passes right over the bridge, next to the tracks. We have walked this twice, most recently in October 2022. 

We are always happy to find fountains where we can fill our water bottles!

Up ahead is the parish church of Unterbäch. It is next to the cable-car station, and we just had enough time to look inside. The church was originally built in 1558, but enlarged in 1678 and again in 1775.

What a pretty organ with painted wings. This beautiful piece was built in about the year 1700 by an unknown organ builder.  

We got to the Unterbäch cable-car station at just before departure time of 12:25! This was a larger cabin than the one to/from Eischoll.

Across the valley on the north side of the railway line is the town of Raron, with the little "church on the hill". We visited the church in May of 2019 when we started there on a walk along the "Valais Sunshine Trail"

Back in Visp we had to wait about 20 minutes for the bus to Ausserberg. As it was now 12:45, we took advantage of the break to have our picnic lunch.

PART III: A Quick Evening Stroll in the Town of Thun

(This was Carrie's favourite part of the day! She wants to come again. We had already done an extensive walking tour of this beautiful city in 2018 when we spent a night in a hotel here after visiting Mt.Schilthorn. Those photos are HERE and HERE, at the bottom of each album). 

We discovered that the town holds a water show in the summer at 7:30 p.m., but we could not stay as it would have been too late getting home. Next time!

Leaving Eggerberg south of the Lötschberg tunnel at 16:43, we got back to Lake Thun by 6 p.m., after having traveled the "Panorama Route" this time, via the upper Lötschberg tunnel and Kandersteg. The peaks in the background, once again from left to right, are: Schreckorn, Eiger, Mönch, and (a bit of ) Jungfrau. 

Heading into the charming town of Thun after ordering pizza to take out (which we ate on a bench on the other side of this lovely wooden covered bridge). It was fun to watch surfers on the Aare River here!

We sauntered down the main street looking at all the shops, which were on two levels, an upper walkway along shops, and additional shops below! (And apartments above the shops). 

We then reached the main square of the old town, with the lovely town hall and fountain.

The buildings along the canal reflect in the gorgeous turquoise water. There was a water show to start by 7:30, but we had to head out, as it was still a trip of over two hours to get back home.

Three-Day Trip to Visp Region in Canton Valais:

We were lucky to have some very nice weather pretty well all over the country on the Easter weekend, so we treated ourselves to a two-night hotel stay in Canton Valais in the Visp region, because we were certain that there were many opportunities for hiking there. As it turns out, we did three very different hikes of about three hours each, walked about 35 km in those three days, and saw and learned about some wonderful things, and visited loads of typical Valais villages. And the hotel was great: Superb view; our own balcony; quiet; and the option of taking our meals in the hotel's restaurant. For us, it is ideal that only hotel guests can eat at the restaurant. So much quieter that way!

Friday April 2, 2021 -- Day 1 of our three-day trip: A Stroll from Eischoll to Unterbäch to see the "Flowers of Light"

The rare flower called Spring Meadow Saffron is found in particular abundance in Canton Valais, and mostly so in the meadows around the mountain village of Eischoll. The highly poisonous flowers emerge as soon as the snow melts and last only a few days. As there were still many large patches of snow on this shady side of the Rhône Valley, we were treated to loads and loads of flowers in the early stages of their bloom. This is my third time in this village to come see these flowers, but this timing was the best so far. 

After doing the short themed loop called "Lichtblumenweg" specifically created to bring you to the most prolific meadows, we ascended along the old irrigation channel -- the water was running, which is always a treat -- and via partly snow-covered trails through clearings and forests to the next village called Unterbäch, enjoying many more sightings of the flowers along the way.

... and also, a snake surprised us on the trail! It moved across the trail so quickly that I couldn't gather my wits quickly enough to take a photo! More than likely it was a simple and harmless grass snake, but there are poisonous vipers here that look pretty much the same!

To get to the mountain village of Eischoll, you go up with a cable-way from Raron in the Rhône Valley. Across the valley is the reknowned castle church (there is another section of the church built wholly into the cliff below). Also, behind it is the Bietsch Valley, where we also have done several hikes.

Following the designated "Lichtblumenweg" we were not disappointed. There were vast fields of these flowers in full bloom!

The flowers come out shortly after the snow melts! Here is what is left of the ski run, which we crossed again later on our way eastward again.

Heading up to the old irrigation channel now (Suone) for our hike higher up and eastward to Unterbäch. Down below in the town of Raron you can see the scar of a very recent and large rockslide (29th of January 2021)

The first time we were here, we walked westward to Ergisch and missed most of the flowers. This is the second time I am walking on the "Suonenweg" (irrigation trail) and Urs' first time. (Direction Breitmattu)

After a loop to the east of Eischoll, we headed west again, and then along the "Old Irrigation Trail". There was too much snow to complete the Irrigation Trail, so we crossed the ravine further down and headed to Unterbäch. Obviously, we took longer than three hours for this!

I was so happy that there was water running in the irrigation channel! 

There was much more snow than last time I was here (April 22, 2018)

We had to cross the ski hill where the snow takes longer to melt. So we did get in a "Snow Hike" after all this year!

All along the irrigation channel were sections of the hillside where the Spring Meadow Saffron flowers were also coming out after the receding winter snow!

Once in a while there is a white version of the flower as well!

A look downhill into the Rhône Valley

It was just before this loop that we surprised the snake on the path! As we progressed along the trail, we were always unsure if we would run into so much snow that we'd have to turn back!

(As an aside, this is what the snake looked like -- photo from the Internet. This is a "smooth snake", but the poisonous asp viper looks very similar, but has slit pupils instead of round ones. We didn't get a close enough look at the eyes....)

On the large open sunny plateau called "Breitmattu" we stopped for a coffee break, and imagined the summer ambiance with cows! (There is a mountain dairy here)

From here we head further uphill and into the little ravine, before heading back downhill to Unterbäch.

It has become fashionable to renovate these old barns into small residences. The insides are pretty modern, but the outside features must be maintained.

We planned our hike so that our trail passed through this tiny hamlet called "Holz". It was very charming, and we were glad we risked it!

Every once in a while we see these wood carvings of ugly masks called "Tschäggättä" which originate in the Lötschental Valley to the North of the Rhône Valley

Made it with not quite five minutes to spare!

Heading back down to the town of Raron. This gorge is very narrow and deep, and the cable car supports are simply built on the cliffs along the way.

From the cable-way stations it is a five-minute walk to the Raron train station, and then a short train ride to Visp, from where we took a bus up to the high mountain village of Visperterminen, where we had booked two nights at the Rothorn Hotel. We hadn't made any plans yet for the excursion for the next day, but the bus ride took us past the Heida Vineyards, allegedly the highest in Europe, and so a walk in that direction is what we planned for DAY 2.

This town called Niederhäusern is one of many such villages here along the hillside, so we decided this would be part of our excursion the next day as well.

Our hotel in Visperterminen (Hotel Rothorn). We had a very nice room on the top floor. The chair lift is right next to the hotel, but not running at this time of year. And since no day-visitors are allowed in the restaurant, there was no one using the outdoor terrace below the balcony. Perfect for us!

The area of Canton Valais where we spent three days. This is not far from the Matterhorn (Zermatt), which we have seen before. We did not make a trip that way, expecting there to be many people over the Easter Weekend.
