City of Rapperswil and the Boardwalk on Lake Zurich

(This post created on May 24, 2026 based on a Facebook post I did at the time)

Wednesday April 9, 2014 -- I had to pick up something for Urs from a seller of model trains in Jona near Rapperswil in Canton St.Gallen and so took time to view the attractive city of Rapperswil on a super gorgeous day!  After catching some rays on the old city wall at the site of the large medieval castle, I walked across the wooden boardwalk partway across Lake Zurich, to catch the train at Hurden. I would have walked all the way across to Pfäffikon, but didn't have the proper shoes on. (!)

I spent quite a bit of time walking around the old church and castle up here at the highest part of the old town of Rapperswil.

View down the main street which leads up to the site of the castle via a long staircase.

From up here I can see the boardwalk which I am headed to now. There is a train station halfway across the land bridge at a place called Hurden. On the far side of the lake is the city of Pfäffikon.

From the city wall, incoming boat from Zurich.

Looks like a Lindt Chocolate bunny on the back! Hopefully not real chocolate.

My cargo: had to mark it so no one would be speared on the meter-long track in my bag.

Down below are the famous monastery rose gardens. Too early for the flowers yet.

A look up to the castle walls where I had just been.

Lakeside promenade.

It would be over an hour to walk to Pfäffikon. I only made it to the train station in Hurden, 30 minutes from here.

Heading off on the boardwalk looking west.

A look behind me at the city of Rapperswil

Many water birds here.

Not very many people on the boardwalk on this beautiful April day!

View south across the upper part of Lake Zurich, called the Obersee.

Rapperswil as seen from the boardwalk

A view of the boardwalk section from Rapperswil to Hurden, after a thorough walk through the old town of Rapperswil.
